A Friend From Ethiopia was performed in Tampere in autumn 2024, in collaboration with Dance Theatre MD. Said about the work:

“A particularly fine example of what an important text, a great dance performance and swinging music can do together.” (Paljon melua Teatterista)
___

“The narrator, and primus motor of the whole performance, Sanna Kekäläinen, sometimes takes a back seat, accompanied by dancer and singer Janne Marja-Aho. They form a joint, intertwining and untwining flexible movement series.” (Ritva Alpola, Kulturitoimitus).
___

“The intense Kekäläinen in overalls is like a possessed, twitching movement and swooping speech, a one-woman whirlwind. Her mission is to be the voice of ashes and the life … All this exquisite movement is accompanied by the masterful music of Jussi Tuurna and a magnificent band.” (Paljon melua Teatterista; 30.8.2024)

STORY BEHIND THE WORK

A Friend From Ethiopia 2 is written by Kari Hukkila, whose novel Tuhat ja yksi it is based on.

Kari Hukkila‘s text, which runs strongly throughout the work, chops up the argument into different forms, and spins the refugee story in particular through both speech and song. Hukkila’s text, defined as post-dramatic, fits easily into a movement-based work for which breaking away from traditional forms of drama is commonplace.” (Merja Koskiniemi, Aamulehti)
