Kekäläinen & Company and Dance Theatre MD:
A FRIEND FROM ETHIOPIA
in premiere 29.8.2024 in Tampere
A FRIEND FROM ETHIOPIA is an absurd, touching and humoristic musical theatre piece that which innovatively addresses a current reality we all share, equating refugee and paperlessness with the climate crisis and mass extinction. The unifying metaphor of the event is the concept of the paperless refugee and the argument from this perspective: ”Every human being comes from Ethiopia.”.
Combining various art forms and genres from contemporary dance to live art, music and literature, A Friend from Ethiopia is a fusion of Sanna Kekäläinen’s new-materialistic views, Jussi Tuurna’s approach to musical theatre and Kari Hukkila’s postdramatic playwriting.
With performers Suvi Eloranta, Sanna Kekäläinen, Anniina Kumpuniemi, Janne Marja-Aho ja Samuli Roininen and musicians Esko Grunström, Sara Puljula and Jussi Tuurna.
“The work is extremely interesting and challenging because for the first time I am combining a large-scale script, live music, sound design, and my conceptual thinking about the significance of movement in the world during this unstable time.” – Sanna Kekäläinen
